¿Creer o no creer? • Believe or Un-believe?

¿Soy creyente? Si y no…

¿Soy creyente? Si y no. ¿Y tu, en qué crees?

Note: This post is long, but if you’re intending to know my heart a bit more, I think this one is worth the read.

Here I am sitting on a plane and wondering about every onboard passenger's faith and beliefs. When it comes to others, all I can do is wonder. It also prompts me to reflect, ¿what about myself? A few weeks ago I shared a photo of an old couple that looks very similar to my vision of my husband and I when we get old. Most of my cyber-friends the commented expressed the same tenderness that I felt when I look at it. However, there was one person that lashed out at me claiming that I wasn't a believer and didn't expect Jesus' return—as prophesied in the book of Revelation—simply because I expect to get old.

At first, I just brushed off the comment, like I do any hyper-religious remark. Still, this whole 'believer' thing had sent me into a non-stop reflective whirlwind of sorts. I just couldn't get the nagging question out of my head. Am I truly a believer? After weeks of introspective analysis, I have found the answer to this very valid question. Am I a believer? Yes and no…

Many of you probably just had an automatic "huh?" strike your minds upon reading that. To others, this answer may seem like nonsense, but read on; it all comes to sense in a few more lines. Do I believe in God, the Father and Creator? Absolutely. Do I believe that Jesus, the Son of God came from heaven to earth as a man, lived, died, resurrected and is coming back for His children? Oh yeah. Do I believe that the Holy Spirit is my guide and best friend? Every waking moment of my life. Do I believe my life stops because of all of these beliefs? Big no no!

You see, I desperately seek the presence of God. I long for the day when I can see Him face to face and be with Him eternally. I wake up every morning desiring to go to my heavenly home. Regardless of this, it is impossible for me to fathom not making my life here on earth worth something, precisely because of what I believe. Could you imagine what it would be like if I spent my every day sitting on my hands because it might be my last day on earth? It is very possible that taking that route will guarantee being judged by God as irresponsible, like the servant that buried his talent (Matthew 25:14-30).

Some other things I don't believe in are: hate in the name of false righteousness, judging or condemning in the name of religion, saying "I love you" with the mouth but "I despise you" with actions, hunger due to others not sharing from their abundance, fighting one another when peace is easier to maintain than war, abuse of the helpless and less fortunate, sickness, abandonment, unmerited brokenness, and people dying without having heard of the one true God that loves them and wants to save them simply because God’s kids won’t talk about Him through their lifestyles.

I do believe that for all of these people Christ died. I also believe that, because He died, it is our duty as His children to share His love with others, and live a full life that can be used as a model of His goodness, grace, and favor, regardless of how soon He may come for us. As a very wise and God-fearing man once said, "preach the gospel at all times; if necessary use words."

None of my beliefs will ever be invested in worthlessness, yet all of it will be invested in God and what He has spoken. Let us rise above being 'believers' and walk as 'livers' of His sacred Word (2 Corinthians 3:2). Let’s put some more action to our beliefs to mend a world of erred beliefs. Only this way can we effectively spread the light of our Father’s love and save a world that’s crying out to be saved. In the end, His love, His truth, and His grace are more real than each breath we take.
Am I a believer? Yes and no. How about you?
